2016 Hot Products Cover Featured and Sponsored Racer Mark Gomez • Professional Jetski Athlete Freeride • Freestyle • Closed Course Racer • Vintage Racer As a kid, Mark religiously watched Larry Rippenkroeger, Scott Watkins and Chris Fischetti tear up surf in the VHS movie Jet Dreams . He first started riding in the surf on a Kawasaki 550sx in 2004, his freshman year of high school. His first step into the industry was when he got a job working for Pacific Motorsports in Brea, California. This job allowed him to learn how to work on jetskis and supported his growing freeride addiction. Over the next few years, while riding in Oceanside, California’s premier location, he met riders and friends that inspired him to push his riding to levels beyond his expectations. Many of the Oceanside regulars, like Ross Champion, Randy Laine, Mike Serlin, Taylor Curtis, Jeremy Fleming, John Howe, Matt Smith, Zack Bright and JFB, all became close friends and still ride together. This group of friends set a great example and took the time to work with Mark to convey what it takes to be a pro, secure sponsorships and, most importantly, how to represent these sponsors. By the time he graduated high school, he had made it his goal and priority to become a professional jetski athlete. The first step in this process was achieved when Wamiltons Customs responded to a sponsorship request letter. Through a generous customer, a beat up 2004 Yamaha SuperJet project became his first big break into the competitive freeride scene. After many freerides, trials and errors, his first major event victory came at the 2009 Blowsion Surfslam, Freeride Champion. After years of riding, progressing in abilities, sponsorships, competitions, event attendance and experience in the closed course racing discipline, it came time to get the equipment required to compete against the top freeriders around the world. A sponsorship agree- ment was signed with Rick Roy and his company Rickter-RRP, beginning a great relationship. A Rickter hull and RRP parts are the highest quality in the industry, but Mark needed the parts assembled into the best Rickter possible, able to put up with all of the slamming abuse of riding. It was a very simple decision, Taylor Curtis at TC Freeride would build the complete Rickter. In 2015, equipped with the TC Freeride Rickter Edge, Mark set his sights on the 2015 IFWA Freeride World Title. Supported by incredible sponsors and his family, and with consistent and exceptional performance from the Rickter hulls, Mark traveled through tour stops in Australia, Portugal, France and the UK, on his way to the finals in Oregon, USA. At the finals, he was able to ride his best and achieve the 2015 IFWAWorld Title! Mark’s 2016 plans are to travel the world attending and competing in more than 20 events, in all four disciplines, Freeride, Freestyle, Closed Course Racing and Vintage Racing Aside from competitive jetskiing, Mark works part-time at Universal Studios Hollywood, performing as an X2 riding villain in a live action stunt show. He has also made appearances in a national Adidas television commercial, and in the intro of a DreamWorks movie. Without the support of his family and all of his valued sponsors, many of his achievements would not have been possible.
